What do we mean by Pixels, DPI, and Resolution?
A digital image is similar to a spreadsheet with rows and columns which stores the pixel values generated by the sensor. Millions of pixels make up a single picture. The more pixels in a picture, ultimately the clearer the picture is. Pixels are represented by a number. ie: 640x480 or 3872x2592. This number is known as resolution, therefore the higher your resolution of your image, the clearer the image. Pixels can also be expoited to create a larger print. By multiplying the resolution of your image, it is possible to find out the megapixel value of your camera.
For good quality prints, the image needs to be a specific resolution, or it becomes "pixelated" as shown below:

Low Resolution Photo High Resolution Photo
We print our photos at a resolution of 300 pixels per square inch (DPI). What this means is that for every square inch you look at, there are 300 of the pixels of your digital image staring back at you. The human eye can view detail at a close range of 150 - 300 pixels in a square inch. Once printed, the higher the DPI, the clearer the picture will appear. |
